There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Trout

by Teri Sloat

There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Trout!

Illustrated by Reynold Ruffins.

New York: Henry Hold and Company, 1998.

An aquatic take on an old farm favorite.   The old lady swallows a trout, salmon, otter, porpoise, walrus, whale, and the ocean.

Good Points:

  • Colorful and detailed illustrations.  Vivid, inspirational art.
  • One illustration gives an interesting view of the world without oceans.
  • Funny rhymes—fun to get class participation on “It wanted OUT!”

Other Notes:

  • The trout connection is incidental.
  • The woman does regurgitate everything she swallows.
