The Hopeful Trout

by John Ciardi

The Hopeful Trout and Other Limericks.

Illustrated by Susan Meddaugh.  Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1989.

This is an illustrated collection of limericks, mostly involving nature and animal themes.

Good Points:

  • It contains a wide variety of limericks, on a wide variety of topics.
  • Could be used to inspire a limerick project.
  • Accompanied by funny illustrations.

Other Notes:

  • In the one poem about trout, it is getting eaten.
  • Most of the poems seem fairly violent or macabre.
